The Next Space: The journey ahead

The Next Space is an iterative think-tank about the future of spatial design. The launch event will take place in Eindhoven on 21 October, coinciding with Dutch Design Week. A limited number of 120 design professionals will embark on a one-day make-a-thon, inspired by speakers that will address today’s top design issues. The launching event will zoom in on the resilient city. - All keynotes will be livestreamed free of charge in the IBA Forum.

At 9:00 Robert Thiemann will introduce The Next Space: its scope, ambitions and program.

Robert Thiemann is the founder of Frame, a global platform for professionals in the interior design industry. Dedicated to exploring what's next in spatial design, Frame is always on the lookout for what's happening on the cusp of innovation and creativity. Established in 1997 as a magazine, Frame meanwhile publishes books, recognizes spatial design excellence with the Frame Awards, organizes physical and virtual events, and offers strategic and communication advice to its stakeholders.

The Next Space: A plan for the planet

The Next Space is an iterative think-tank about the future of spatial design. The launch event will take place in Eindhoven on 21 October, coinciding with Dutch Design Week. A limited number of 120 design professionals will embark on a one-day make-a-thon, inspired by speakers that will address today’s top design issues. At 09:30 Patrick Frick will make clear why spatial design should protect our commons: biodiversity, climate, land, oceans and water.

Patrick Frick is the lead facilitator of the Global Commons Alliance, a network of influential leaders and organizations that aims to empower citizens, cities, companies and countries to become stewards of our global commons. Frick is also the co-founder and chairman of Moving Walls, a provider of mobile, writeable office tools for agile working methods.

The Next Space: The healing city

At 10:00, healthcare expert Kurt Ward will speak about the future of healthcare, which will be distributed across the home, hospital, road and its impact on the way we live, play and work.

As senior design director at Philips Healthcare, Kurt Ward is responsible for strategic alliances and collaborations to stimulate, inspire and explore new value spaces and innovation opportunities. He is based at Philips in the Netherlands and has led global design teams for over twenty years.

The Next Space: The mobile city

The Next Space is an iterative think-tank about the future of spatial design. The launch event will take place in Eindhoven on 21 October, coinciding with Dutch Design Week. A limited number of 120 design professionals will embark on a one-day make-a-thon, inspired by speakers that will address today’s top design issues. At 13:00 Paul Priestman will ask how urban mobility can become more sustainable, accessible, efficient and how this will impact the design of cities and neighbourhoods.

Paul Priestman is founder and chairman of design agency PriestmanGoode, industrial designer Priestman is known for envisioning and delivering complex, high-profile transport projects, including the New Tube for London, the Hyperloop passenger capsules, Airbus aircraft interiors and the Hong Kong Metro Trains.

At 13:30, urban economics expert Eveline van Leeuwen will explain what the rise of urban agriculture means for the way cities will be planned and experienced.

Eveline van Leeuwen is scientific director at Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. She’s also chair of urban economics at Wageningen University & Research, vice president of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA), a member of the OECD Expert Advisory Committee on Rural Innovation and a member of the International Advisory Board (IAB) of the Amsterdam Economic Board.
